Burns Lake Community Forest will be continuing Phase 1 of its Landscape Fire Management Plan prepared by B.A Blackwell & Associates during the second half of September and early October 2021
– Weather Permitting –
Phase 1 is the area south of town and directly across Burns Lake. Supported by Shifting Mosaics Consulting and Northern Fire WoRx Corp. (Landscape Prescribed Fire Specialists), in collaboration with local Ministry and the Northwest Fire Center, Burns Lake Community Forest will commence with re-introducing prescribed fire on the land base. This is part and parcel of ensuring that our fire management efforts have a lasting effect.
The forests surrounding our communities are fire regenerated and fire-maintained ecosystems. Our ability to integrate fire back on to the landscape will not only help support our community protection efforts, but also bring back ecosystem functions and attributes that have been suppressed for many years.
We have been communicating extensively on the progress of this project since mid-2018. In the Spring of 2021 we conducted our first prescribed fire and we hosted a Fire School for to continue building capacity in our community.
We are significantly thankful to the BC Community Forest Association for their support and financial contributions.
